A well-kept carpet does more than just look good—it makes a room feel put-together and lasts a whole lot longer. At Dongsheng Carpet, we manufacture floor coverings for residential projects and commercial spaces alike, so we have seen firsthand which maintenance habits make the difference. Here’s our straight-to-the-point guide on caring for residential carpets, no fluff.
Once a week is the minimum, and twice a week in busy spots like living rooms and hallways. This picks up loose dirt and gritty particles before they work their way deep into the pile and start grinding down fibers.
If the room layout permits, rotate your carpet 180 degrees every six months or so. It spreads foot traffic and furniture pressure more evenly, so you don’t end up with one obviously worn patch.
Strong sunlight will fade just about any textile. Position carpets away from windows that get hours of harsh sun, or use curtains and blinds during peak daylight to protect the color.
Speed matters. Blot the spill with a clean white cloth, working from the outside in. Never scrub aggressively—you’ll push the stain deeper and rough up the yarn.
Regular vacuuming only does so much. Plan a proper deep clean at least once or twice a year, either with a hot water extraction machine or by bringing in a professional service. It pulls out the hidden grime that household vacuums leave behind.
A quality underlay under the carpet reduces friction against the floor, stops the carpet from slipping, and just feels better underfoot. It’s a small investment that dramatically cuts wear.
If a loop pulls up or a tuft sticks out, trim it neatly with scissors. Tugging on loose yarns can cause a run and damage the carpet backing.
Grit carried in on shoe soles acts like sandpaper on carpet fibers. A dedicated shoe area at the entrance and encouraging a switch to indoor slippers is one of the simplest ways to keep carpets clean longer.
Wool is luxurious, but it absorbs moisture easily and can be fussy. Vacuum gently with a soft-bristle head. When a spill happens, use wool-safe cleaners and blot, never soak. Deep cleaning is best left to specialists who understand wool’s tendency to shrink or distort if mishandled.
These mix natural and synthetic fibers, giving a nice balance of feel and durability. Routine vacuuming does the heavy lifting. For stains, a mild diluted detergent applied with a damp cloth works well, followed by blotting dry.
Polypropylene is inherently stain-resistant and dries quickly. Light soiling can often be rinsed away with plain water. For tougher spots, mild soap solution, a gentle rub, then rinse and towel dry—straightforward and effective.
Polyester holds color beautifully and stands up to wear. For cleanup, stick to lukewarm water and gentle cleaning agents. Avoid steam cleaners set too hot and stay away from strong chemicals that can dull the fiber’s luster.
Nylon is a workhorse—incredibly resilient and forgiving. Regular vacuuming paired with mild detergent spot treatment handles most everyday messes. Having a professional hot-water extraction done periodically brings back the pile height and removes the deep-down dirt you can’t see.
Vacuum thoroughly first. Apply a diluted carpet cleaning solution and let it dwell for about 15 minutes. Use a carpet extraction machine and immediately follow with a wet vacuum to pull out soiled water. This significantly cuts drying time.
Start with a full vacuum pass and pretreat any visible stains. Use a wool-approved dry foam shampoo—work it in with a soft brush, let it do its job, then repeat if necessary. Afterward, rake the pile in one direction with a carpet groomer to speed up drying and keep the surface smooth.
Lightly mist the area with water, add a drop or two of mild dish soap, and blot repeatedly with a clean cloth. Once the stain lifts, press a thick dry towel onto the spot to absorb residual moisture. Patience here beats aggressive scrubbing.
Stick to vacuum attachments with smooth edges; anything with teeth or rough plastic can snag the face yarn. Place protective pads under heavy furniture legs to prevent permanent dents. And if you are ever unsure about a cleaning product, test it on an inconspicuous corner first.
